In the course of only 20 years, the lionfish has been explosively spreading itself. Since the first sighting in Florida in 1992, it can now be found along the entire US East Coast, east to Bermuda and south throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the entire Caribbean. In 2009, it first invaded the waters of Curaçao. This beautiful but highly unwelcome fish has no natural predators and poses a real threat to our coral reefs and fish.
So what can we do to help? It’s simple: eat them! They taste delicious.
However, please be careful while handling them, because its sharp spines inject a poison that is very painful. Make sure you see our instruction video on how to safely clean them and then try our tasty lionfish recipes!
