It is already June and the Food Revolution Day has come and gone. Worldwide, May 15th is proclaimed as Food Revolution Day. On this day, hundreds of food ambassadors all over the world organize fun events for children about food education. So, as a newly appointed ambassador of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution I was immediately put to work!
On Curacao, together with my fellow ambassador Muriel Strobos, we made wild plans to turn the local zoo into an open-air cooking studio. Lucky for us, the director of the zoo, Bert Isenia, thought it was a great idea and was happy to accommodate us. So we contacted 10 local schools and invited almost 200 children to come and cook with us.
200 Children? Seriously? What did we get ourselves into?
Soon enough it was that Friday morning May 15th. Showtime! We had just finished setting up the cooking stations under the zoo’s ancient trees, when the little chefs started to arrive. We were very excited when the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Christina, also made her entrance. Which meant support from the local government for our event. Great! Mrs. Christina officially opened the day with an inspiring welcome speech for the children about the importance of healthy food. Then it was time to get to work.
The children learned how easy it is to make your own fresh fruit smoothies, papaya jelly, banana pancakes, healthy waffles, tomato soup, homemade lemonade and Jamie’s special Squash It Sandwich. This sandwich is made with lots of fresh veggies, which the children got to bash up with a rolling pin. Even veggies become tasty when you get to bash them up right?
After 4 hours of cooking fun the day came to an end. The kids did an excellent job and each got a recipe booklet to take home. And we? We are very happy with the success of the 1st Curacao Food Revolution Day. And those 200 kids? They turned out to be a piece of cake. Just get them to cook and they turn into little angels!
Since we do our work as ambassadors on a voluntary bases, we are very happy with the help of all volunteers and the support of our sponsors: KPMG Meijburg & Co, Studio Acht, SFT Bank, Blue Bay Curacao, Parke Tropikal, Grafitex, Caribbean Packaging Centre, Kooyman, MCB, Albert Heijn, Vivian’s Nursery, Support, Soltuna and Natural & Organic. Thank you all, we couldn’t have done it without you!
Finally, a big thanks to Bert for his enthusiasm and support. You are a rock star. And: we will be back!
